Treating Sciatica at Full Body Rejuvenation Center

If you are one of the millions of Americans that suffer from back pain, then chances are you have sciatica. Sciatica refers to an irritation of the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body. It runs from the lower back, branches out at the buttocks and continues down each leg all the way to the foot. It innervates the skin and muscles of the lower leg and foot.

Sciatica pain can be quite intense. It can affect everything from leg movement to bladder and bowel control. The pain from sciatica is sometimes chronic, but with proper treatment, a chiropractor may be able to help you avoid surgery.

What Causes Sciatica?

The most common cause is a herniated disc in the spine. A disc is a ring of fibrous tissue that provides cushioning between the vertebrae. Chronic strain or trauma can cause one or more of these disks to bulge out, putting pressure on the nerve.

In some cases, the pinching may be from a bone spur on one the vertebrae. A bone spur is an abnormal projection the forms in the joints. The spur takes up space, putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The hallmark symptoms of sciatica are lower back pain that radiates to your buttock and down the leg. You may feel pain in other areas along the nerve, as well. The level of pain depends on the amount of stress on the nerve. It can anywhere from a mild ache to sharp, jolting pain that feels like an electric shock. There may also be weakness in one leg.

People with severe sciatica may have bowel and bladder control problems, too.
