Get non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical relief through the conservative sciatica treatment methods we offer at Full Body Rejuvenation Center in Lithonia/Stonecrest.

Know Your Sciatica: Typical Causes and Telltale Symptoms

Sciatica is a set of symptoms that indicate an underlying medical problem, as opposed to being a disorder or condition in its own right. The symptoms are associated with impingement of some part of a large nerve called the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve extends through the hip and leg as the principal pathway for all the leg’s nerve messages. If this nerve becomes pinched at any point, any or all of the nerves beyond that point may malfunction.

Sometimes the impingement occurs due to swelling around the nerve itself, but more commonly it afflicts the large nerve roots that connect the sciatic nerve to the base of the spine. In many cases, one or more of the discs that normally prevent pain by cushioning the vertebrae has slipped out of position, bulging or herniating so that it presses against sciatic nerve roots. Bony overgrowths such as bone spurs can also project outward onto the nerve roots, pinching off their communications with the sciatic nerve.

While low back pain commonly occurs with sciatica, leg pain is another telltale symptom. This pain may vary intensity or with specific activities (including the passive act of sitting). Muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and tingling sensations in the foot or leg may also occur. Emergency cases can even affect bladder/bowel control.
