“Text neck” is a term often used to describe neck pain obtained as a result of frequent cell phone use. Here is some information about this condition to read over.

WHAT “TEXT NECK” IS

“Text neck” is a relatively newer term created to describe pain one feels in their neck as the result of using electronic devices. When you look down at a device frequently, the neck muscles become stretched. Excessive cell phone or device use causes a dull pain to remain in the neck. This pain can cause hindrances in the conducting of everyday tasks and will remain if steps are not proactively taken to alleviate discomfort.

WAYS TO AVOID TEXT NECK

There are a few ways to avoid neck pain if you use an electronic device regularly. Make sure to sit up in a straight position and keep your shoulders back. Lift your arms upward so your device is in front of your eyes. Alternately, use a holder for your device to keep it at eye-level. The best way to avoid neck pain is to reduce the amount of time you spend looking down at your phone or similar device.

STRETCHES THAT MAY HELP REDUCE PAIN FROM DEVICE USE

Before using a device, do some simple stretches to help keep your body limber. Stretch your hands ten times each before using your device. Start with balled fists and then outstretch your fingers for a few seconds before curling them back into fists. To reduce neck pain, stand up straight and keep your arms in relaxed positions down at your sides. Turn your arms inwards and stop to stretch them for several seconds when your thumbs are pointing behind you. Relax and repeat.
